This role is ideal for a technically strong, hands-on accounting leader who thrives in a high-growth, fast-moving environment and can operate both strategically and tactically — owning core accounting functions while designing and building the infrastructure needed to support continued growth. The Director, Controllership will be responsible for the integrity of financial reporting, oversight of accounting operations, and development of a scalable control environment from the ground up. This role partners closely with Finance, Revenue Cycle Management, and cross-functional stakeholders — including senior leadership and investors — to ensure compliance, operational efficiency, and long-term financial health. What You Will Do:  <ul> <li>Own and lead the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting. </li> <li>Oversee core accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and vendor payments. </li> <li>Ensure compliance with federal and state tax requirements, including oversight of filings and coordination with external advisors. </li> <li>Manage sales tax compliance and state and local registrations, ensuring adherence to multi-state requirements. </li> <li>Lead external audit activities, including preparation of audit schedules, documentation, and coordination with auditors. </li> <li>Oversee cash flow management and forecasting, partnering with Finance to ensure liquidity and financial visibility. </li> <li>Manage treasury functions, including bank account management, cash positioning, and related controls. </li> <li>Oversee corporate credit card programs, including policy enforcement, monitoring, and reconciliation processes. </li> <li>Partner with FP&A and Revenue Cycle Management to ensure accurate revenue recognition and financial alignment. </li> <li>Design, implement, and continuously enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to mitigate risk and support scalability. </li> <li>Drive process improvements and automation initiatives with a builder’s mindset, improving efficiency and reducing manual work in a resource-efficient environment. </li> <li>Support and lead accounting system optimization, including experience with or implementation of Sage Intacct. </li> <li>Lead, manage, and develop a team of 5 accounting professionals, providing coaching, mentorship, and performance management. </li> <li>Flex into strategic initiatives and emerging priorities as Synapse Health scales, bringing both structure and adaptability to new challenges. </li> </ul> What You Have:   At Synapse Health, we’ve intentionally built a culture rooted in kindness, collaboration, and creativity, qualities we consider essential for every team member. Additional requirements include: <ul> <li>Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA strongly preferred. </li> <li>12–15 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of accounting teams; experience in a high-growth startup or early-stage company environment strongly preferred. </li> <li>Strong expertise in GAAP, technical accounting, and financial reporting. </li> <li>Proven experience owning month-end close, audits, and multi-entity accounting operations. </li> <li>Experience managing tax compliance (federal, state, and sales tax). </li> <li>Hands-on experience with cash flow management and treasury operations; comfort operating in environments with lean resources and evolving financial infrastructure. </li> <li>Familiarity with ERP systems; experience with Sage Intacct strongly preferred; ability to evaluate, implement, or scale systems as the business grows. </li> <li>Demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing teams, including building or scaling accounting functions from the ground up. </li> <li>Proven ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments and adapt processes to support rapid organizational change. </li> <li>Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. </li> <li>Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner cross-functionally, including with founders, investors, and board-level stakeholders. </li> <li>Healthcare industry experience is a plus, but not required. </li> </ul> What Sets You Apart:  <ul> <li>Ownership & Accountability: Takes full responsibility for outcomes and drives execution. </li> <li>Strategic & Hands-On Leadership: Balances high-level thinking with detailed execution. </li> <li>Operational Excellence: Builds scalable, efficient, and well-controlled processes. </li> <li>Collaborative Partner: Works cross-functionally to drive alignment and results. </li> <li>Adaptable Leader: Thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. </li> <li>Builder’s Mentality: Comfortable creating structure where little exists and scaling systems, processes, and teams in a high-growth environment. </li> </ul> Compensation: The base salary range for this position is $161,000 – $202,000 annually. This range reflects the anticipated compensation at the time of posting. Final compensation will be based on factors such as relevant experience, demonstrated skills, internal equity, and prevailing market conditions.
